Automation and Jobs

by | Mar 21, 2017

Automation and technology  have had huge effect on our lives over the past 100 years and had a huge effect on jobs and wages over that time period (both positive and negative).

While technology has driven a lot of changes in our economy, interestingly automation and technology has only eliminated one of the 271 occupations listed in the 1950 census:  elevator operators.  While other occupations, such as boardinghouse keepers, were eliminated during that time period, only elevator operators were primarily displaced by technology.

A great article on the effects of technology on jobs  which suggests that technology increases inequality and poverty not unemployment:  https://medium.com/@ryanavent_93844/the-productivity-paradox-aaf05e5e4aad#.3nmdexg25
