
Last week I was at a St. Louis Blues hockey game (we won) and the guy sitting behind me asked his granddaughter a question I overheard:
“How thick do you think that ice is down there?”
Stop and think of your own answer.
The granddaughter replied, “well, the way you’re asking it, I’d guess it’s pretty thin — I’ll guess 3 inches.”

From the NHL: “Ice is approximately 3/4″ of an inch thick and is usually chilled at 16 degrees Fahrenheit. The thicker the ice, the softer and slower it becomes.” Which is exactly what the grandfather told his granddaughter. I was blown away.
